So I’m a 1st Generation Bengali Muslim, and I’ve realized that these three descriptions have completely changed the course of American History, particularly the election.

In 2000, John McCain lost to George Bush in the primaries becuase there was a smear campaign that said that McCain had an illegitamate black child. This was a reference to McCain’s adopted child from Bangladesh, Bridget McCain. So if it wasn’t for this Bengali, McCain might be President now. Who knows what role Bridget will play in this election. Either way, if McCain wins, there will be a Bengali in the White House before an African American, Latino, Asian or any other race.

This election, the largest smear against Barack Obama was that he was a secret Muslim. In a recent post, I said how most of the country thinks he is Muslim. Either way, Obama’s grandfather and step-father were both Muslim, and he did grow up in Muslim Indonesia for a while. Not to mention his middle name is Hussein. He has a better understanding of Islam than any other candidate in History. And the fact that this country would vote for a man who they think is Muslim makes me feel good.

Also, the most important thing to me is that Barack Obama is the son of an immigrant, like me. I knew Obama back in 2003 because I read his book “Dreams of my Father”, which truly inspired me. Obama, like me, has had trouble his entire finding an identity because of his diverse background. Being the son of an immigrant and being on his way to the most powerful man in the world really inspires me, whether I agree with him or not.

I’ll definetly keep it to the issues, but I’m just letting my own little subconcious rant out about how I think this election truly is historical and amazing at a personal level for me.

Brave New Films came out with a new video today showing McCain’s Spiritual Guide Rod Parsley at work.

But then again, its OK because McCain’s “spiritual guide” just wants to destroy Islam. Islam is unAmerican, so it’s OK to destroy it. Retired Marine Reverend Wright on the other hand critisized the American government, therefore is a lot worse than Rod Parsley because it’s unAmerican to criticize the government.

Thanks to Brave New Films for the video

Presidential Candidates On Islam

DEMOCRATS

Barack Obama

Barack Obama (D) was at the Compassion Forum shown on CNN (YouTube Link Of Whole Show ). here is what he said about Islam:

Barack Obama At Compassion Forum: On Islam

Heres what I noticed:

  • He says “Muslim”, not “Muzlim” or “Moozlim”
  • He seems to understand Islam better than other American politicians.
  • He said Islam shouldn’t be painted with a broad brush.
  • He seems to affirm the idea of Islam needing to be changed (which I disagree with [see below]).

Hillary Clinton

I couldn’t find anything post 9/11 on Hillary’s Website, Google, Wikipedia, or YouTube about Hillary Clinton’s views on what she thinks about Muslims or foreign policy on Muslims, except that she is “an emphatic, unwavering supporter of Israel’s safety and security.”

Pre-9/11, she did help arrange the first Eid Al Fitr at the White House. She received a Qur’an, but said that most of what she and her husband know about Islam comes from her daughter Chelsea. She has also stated before that Islam is the fastest growing religion in America.

What she thinks about Islam today is a mystery (which is sad considering she is a Presidential Candidate for the most powerful positiion in the world.

REPUBLICANS

John McCain

Republican presidential candidate John McCain says a candidate’s ability to uphold the nation’s Judeo-Christian tradition should be a top consideration for voters. That’s why, he says, the thought of a Muslim in the White House makes him nervous. But he does say that there are a lot of good principles in Islam.

John McCain On Islam

Tom Tancredo

He isn’t important, but his views definitively makes him a character. Here is what Tom Tancredo (R) had to say about Islam:

Tom Tancredo on Radical Islam

Yea, he did say Islam is inherently evil. Say hello to the American Geert Wilders.

But thats not all. Here is how he thinks America should deal with Al Qaeda:

Talk show host Pat Campbell asked the Littleton Republican how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons.

“Well, what if you said something like — if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites,” Tancredo answered.

“You’re talking about bombing Mecca,” Campbell said.

“Yeah,” Tancredo responded.’

Might I add that Tancredo was rated one of the 10 worst Congressman by Rolling Stone.

Rudy Giuliani

“We stood face to face with those people and forces who hijacked not just airplanes but a religion and turned it into a creed of terrorism dedicated to eradicating us and our way of life.”

“Islam is a Great Religion”

He says a lot about Islam, but then came out with this TV advertisement.

Readers can decide what he really supports. Personally I think he is a sell out, but at least he’s better than Tancredo.

Ron Paul

“They don’t come here to attack us because we’re rich and we’re free. They come here and attack us because we’re over there.”

Ron Paul believes (I think accurately) that the best way to deal with Islam, especially in the Middle East, is to leave it alone and let Muslims control their own destiny. The following video is probably my most favorite YouTube video of 2007.

Islam: NOT World’s Largest Religion

Nun HijabThere has been some confusion in the media stemming from an error from the Vatican that Islam is now the worlds largest religion. However, anyone that looks at this should notice that Islam is a religion and Catholicism is a sect. To compare a sect and a religion is like comparing a country and a state (possible but not practical). A better comparison would be between Sunni’s and Catholics or Muslims and Christians. With that in mind, here are some statistics.

  1. Christians make up 33% of the world.
  2. Muslims make up 19.2% of the world.
  3. Catholics make up 17.4% of the world.
  4. Sunnis, the largest sect in Islam, make up between 85% to 90% of Muslims.
  5. If 85% are Sunni, Sunnis make 16.3% of the World (multiply 19.2 by .85).
  6. If 90% are Sunni, Sunnis make 17.2% of the World (multiply 19.2 by .90).

Sorry Muslim Brothers and Sisters. We’re not there yet.
